Processing tubes efficiently is important to keep costs down, meet tight deadlines, and maximise value. However, there can be a number of issues, particularly with storage. If you aren’t storing tubes effectively, it can waste time, damage tubing, and even make facilities more dangerous. We want to have a closer look here to explore some of the options. Then, if you need services like tube manipulation, you can rely on us.
What do you need?
Before you look at different types of racking systems to store tubing, it’s wise to have a broad look at your needs. How quickly do you need to be able to locate and move tube? What kind of equipment are you using to move it? What do you need to account for remnants?
A key thing you must consider is floorspace. The goal should be to use the space you have as efficiently as possible. This can reduce the need to extend buildings or consider having to store tubing outside where it is vulnerable. So, instead of leaving tubes on the floor, think about vertical racks that will help you to store a large amount of tubing in the space you have.
Safety should be a priority with tube storage. There is plenty to think about here, including the load bearing capacity of racks, movement of plant like cranes or forklifts, and the potential for injury during storage or retrieval. Keep in mind there can be additional risks if processing includes services like tube manipulation.
Effective storage
Broadly there are two or three different options for tube storage. Firstly is U racks. They are the simplest and more cost effective option. Generally you have standard U-shape frames that tubes sit in. Stacking is possible to help make the most of the floorspace. However, you need a crane to store and retrieve the tubing from the top because of the frames
The second option is cantilever racks. They are interesting because you have vertical uprights (columns) with protruding arms. You store tubing horizontally, so the racks need to be long enough to accommodate products. Additional uprights and arms can be necessary to provide support for long lengths; it will avoid sagging. Importantly, cantilever racks are ideal if you are using a forklift for storage and retrieval thanks to the open front. If you are using a crane, you can choose racks with roll-out arms.
Finally, we have honeycomb racks. In a basic sense what you have is a series of drawers in a grid. You can pull a draw out for loading and retrieval with a forklift or a crane. The drawers make it much easier to identify different types of tube. The downside is you generally need more space here.
Speak to us about tube manipulation and other services
Multiform Tubes Engineering Ltd strives to give clients the very best services. A crucial thing is we take care with the tubing at all times. This includes during storage, handling, and processing. Our goal is to minimise the risk of damage to maximise the quality. At the same time, it ensures our own facility is safer and runs more efficiently.
So, if you want tube manipulation or any other kind of service like bending or end forming, rely on us. We work with a variety of materials, including steel, copper, and more.
