The most important thing to keep in mind when considering tube expansion is that the material to allow the process to take place will come from the walls of the tubing. Naturally this will cause the thickness of the wall to shrink. It is important to calculate how much shrinkage will occur for the amount of expansion needed. This will determine how much larger the wall will need to be when starting out.
If shrinkage is not taken account, the wall thickness may be too thin when final measurements of the inner and outer diameters are taken, which may weaken the section. If this occurs the tube may need to be manufactured again from scratch to ensure the dimensions are correct.
At Multiform Tubes we are committed to offering a first rate tube reduction and expansion service. We have experience of working with tubing made from a range of metals, including durable steel and softer copper and brass. In order to achieve an accurate expansion, we use the latest equipment and effective techniques. All tubes are expanded carefully so they hold their shape and to keep close control over the amount of wall thickness shrinkage.
Tube expansion is generally done by inserting a die in the tubing to alter the shape. Hydraulic dies are highly flexible and can be adjusted once they are inserted into the tube. This makes the process easier and means they can be expanded slowly and gently. A dedicated die is less flexible but is very sturdy; it is inserted into the tube with pressure and force until it reaches the required diameter.
If you need tube ends to be expanded so they can be assembled together, we can manufacture them for you. We prioritise quality and will ensure that each and every tube is manufactured precisely, meeting the required dimensions for the inner diameter, outer diameter and the wall thickness.
