Steel tubes are a common sight in various industries because they provide many benefits. The number of applications expands all the time. One of the most interesting newer potential uses is to reinforce concrete beams with internal voids. New research finds they can deliver impressive results. Let’s have a look, then you can rely on us if you need services like tube expansion, bending, and more.
Changing demands
Concrete beams are a practical choice for various construction projects. They provide a high load bearing capacity, effectively distribute the weight, and offer a range of advantages like excellent fire resistance.
However, classic solid concrete beams aren’t ideal for some modern design requirements. In the past designers would use them and have services underneath, including things like plumbing, electrical conduits, ventilation ducts, and communication infrastructure. But, that often meant needing to install a false ceiling to hide them. It translates to higher construction costs and longer build times.
False ceilings are very unpopular today. People don’t like how they look and the fact they reduce the height of spaces. As a result, there is demand for alternatives. Concrete beams with internal voids are an option, but there is a drawback; the void reduces the strength and load bearing capacity. Luckily, new research may have the perfect solution in the shape of steel tubes. Speak to us if you need tube expansion and other services.
The study
Earlier this year researches published the results of their work exploring the use of steel tubes to reinforce concrete beams with internal voids in reputable journal Scientific Reports. Their goal was to see if the tubing could provide sufficient reinforcement to overcome the performance loss.
The study had some fantastic findings. Their test found a concrete beam with a void had 27.5% less load capacity. However, embedding a rectangular steel tube in to reinforce the void could increase it by 57.1%. Increasing the reinforcement ratio could increase this to 150%. Amazingly, using round steel tube could push it even further to 180%.
This study could have a big impact on the construction industry. We may see more businesses choose to embed steel tube in concrete beams to create voids without compromising performance. It would allow designs to effectively hide services, avoid installing false ceilings, and improve efficiency and sustainability.
