The specific details that separate tubes from pipes

We are proud to supply clients with an extensive list of tube bending services. Using our skills, we can create products suitable for all sorts of applications. Since this is the case, we are an authority on tubing here in the UK.

The thing about tubes and pipes is that people use the two terms interchangeably. They do so to refer to a cylinder that conveys gas or liquid. This definition doesn’t matter all that much unless you are talking about how people use the two in industry. Engineering is a prime example here. In this scenario, many fundamental differences exist between them. Read on if you want to discover what some of them are.

Uses

We will begin with one of the most important differences. People mainly use tubing for structural reasons like scaffolding. As for pipes, we need them to transport liquids and gases.

Sizes

There are differences with the sizing too. You measure tube and pipe differently when figuring out the necessary size. One thing they have in common however are important dimensions like outside and inside diameter, and wall thickness. We measure tube by the precise OD with a determined amount of wall thickness. This thickness is essential because the tube’s strength depends on it. With pipe, you measure it by a nominal OD. The vital property here though is the ID.

Structure

tube bendingFinally, there is the structure. Tubes don’t need to be round. You can have them rectangular or square. They are typically seam welded as well. On the other hand, pipes are always rigid and round since you can’t shape them without special instruments.

At Multiform Tubes, we have the means to offer tube bending services for several different materials. This includes the likes of brass, copper, aluminium, and steel. Because of this, we are always confident that we can meet the needs of our customers.
